kenoma ➩ may 11th, late afternoon

[ The 'voice' that filters into the Kenoma Aions' minds will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has spoken to Howl in the past, but for the new Aions, this presence feels particularly... irreverent. Friendly and airy and carefree, in contrast to to the more callous apathetic mood that generally permeates Achamoth proper. In either case, yes, this is clearly Howl, and for someone who's been missing for a week, he sounds bizarrely normal. ]

Really? A party while I was gone?

Did you botch my invite by accident, or were you just having a laugh at me, ladies?

You've got to let people know about these things ahead of time. If ever you need a hand with all that in the future, come to me, alright?

[ His tone is only vaguely chiding, a sign that he's really not that bothered about missing out, even if he'd have preferred not to. With that out of the way, he switches gears. ]

To our new Aions: greetings! My name is Howl.

Please, forgive my absence at the Kenoma happening last week. Hopefully, it wasn't as miserable and humorless as the last one. Either way, you'll get used to this place, I promise.

If you've any questions that are yet unanswered, you ought to ask them, although I can't guarantee I'm the one to ask. But it's best not to get caught with your pants down, if you'll pardon the crude turn of phrase.

[It is, however, also no secret among them that Xishen isn't exactly a popular figure. Some of them didn't take well to the initial 'test' she and the Regent imposed on them, others found her creepy, etc... The reason varies, but the fact remains that Howl not being impressed with Xishen's concern doesn't come across as particularly shocking or out of character. If anything, it further underlines how dismissive he is of what's happened to him--or rather, has been fully made to believe that whatever disciplinary actions he experienced, it was something positive and enjoyable.

But then again, how can she even begin to try uncovering what he's lost, when she never really came to know him in the first place? Besides, wouldn't working towards undoing whatever that's happened to him go against the Regent's will? Even Xishen said this was for the best, so should she really try to interfere, knowing all that?

...]

I do owe you an apology, yes, now that I've taken some time to think things through. Not for worrying, but for how poorly I expressed it. It wasn't my intention to order you around or belittle your abilities. Our situation is understandably conflicting, but we're not in this alone, and what we have to do doesn't change who we are.

[Regardless of what went down, all this undeniably started with Howl deciding to charge into battle against Estinien alone. If he could have been convinced to partner with someone else, if whatever reason that drove him to believe it was something he had to face by himself could have been overturned...

...No. There's no point entertaining 'what ifs'. What's done is done.]

I apologize for my lack of consideration, Howl, towards your feelings and your motivation.

[It's accompanied by a low and modest bow. As much as it would be nice for this to be as truly sincere as it looks, Ciel cannot refute the ulterior motive she's already reasoned out. Appealing to his individuality would be a natural lead-in to talk about his personal wishes and wants, and exploring that in conjunction with what's driven his past decision could chart a course in uncovering clues of what really happened, what's been taken from him in consequence.

As she was saying: "what we have to do doesn't change who we are." She knows better, but she still can't help herself. Meddlers are just like that, hm?]

[This is admittedly not only brought up by Xishen's revelation that something had happened to Howl, but also from Emet-Selch's word of advice that had moved her perspective, however slight. "It can be easy for those who have not seen sweeping success to become unmotivated or second-guess their objectives. Their contributions are (...) appreciated. Make sure that they do not forget that." Or as she understood it, their allies should feel valued and appreciated for what they do, regardless of their doubtlessly varied motivations that may not necessarily align fully with the Regent's will for destruction and rebirth. Thus Howl's efforts in engaging Estinien should be recognized as much, but as for what led to it and what happened after...

She does stand back up straight at his beckoning, not intending to make a spectacle out of it. It's enough that she properly conveys her intention, though she maintains her serious demeanor in face of his frown. There isn't anything dramatic or exaggerated in it... Hm.]

Intent and execution are two different matters. I challenged you out of concern, but had I expressed myself differently, maybe you would have reacted differently, too.

[And if he chose differently, he may not have had to return with such grievous injuries too. Then...

--No, she can't trap herself in circular thoughts.]

May I try again, if that's okay with you? Ask you about Estinien, and why you wanted to face him alone.

[personal profile] expiera 2022-05-26 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, in full.

[There was never any debt that needed repaying in the first place, but after a quick moment of deliberation, she reaches the conclusion that she may as well run with it: for his peace of mind, and her need for information. It's clear from watching the subtle and glaring changes in Howl's demeanor at the topic that regardless of what had been done to him under the Regent's orders, he still holds no fondness over the ordeal. She remembers well how defeated and suicidal he sounded, and that may only be the tip of the iceberg of what he's suffered.

(...Sorry.)

A subtle softening of her expression is all she can show, though she does look back at him with quiet and attentive eyes free of judgment or accusation. She doesn't say more after that, waiting to see if he'll try explaining himself without prompting first. Or will she have to lead the questions, starting with repeating why he chose to go after Estinien by himself?]

[She won't be obstinate over the details, following him out of the kitchen and offering a silent nod of acknowledgement and thanks for his chivalric gesture. She may be wordy and nosy, but she can be patient and stay quiet until he finishes.

...Hm. So he's sticking to what he more or less already insisted upon, before he headed out back then.]

You risked yourself to protect us?

[It must be all the more ironic coming from her, the one who actually got her throat torn out yet acts as if nothing's happened. There's no suspicion or disbelief either, she's asking plainly because that seems to be what his explanation is amounting to.

(And his legacy, 'Celebrant' just like Dionys...)

She keeps her eyes on him as they walk, but does go out of her way to ensure that she's matching his pace and looking at him in the face while waiting for him to answer. Is that really what it was, Howl?]

[personal profile] expiera 2022-05-29 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
[And yet, it's in moments like these that make his sincerity shine through. Devoid of bragging and posturing, his turning away and the droop of his shoulders speak far more loudly than his words did.

She shakes her head.

(Sorry.)]

I asked why you wanted to face him alone. Your answer just now had many instances of "I know" and "I could", but not once have you said "I want". There is still distinction between duty and desire, even if the difference may not be significant. ...I apologize for phrasing things like this, but I do think your evasive wording proves that there are more nuances to your decision than what you would have us infer.

[Drawing a small breath, it's her turn to look away.]

There were the things you were saying too, after you came back.

[She doesn't elaborate, it's not her intention to be hard on him. It's brought up to support her argument, that's all. Whether he was too weak or delirious, what little he got through communion and his attitude at the time were not of someone who was merely dismayed at failing their duty of "protecting others". So...]

[personal profile] expiera 2022-05-29 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Defensive, or evasive? Suppose the difference doesn't matter, not in the big picture. He has every right to be suspicious, they barely know each other. They have no reason to have any investment in each other. Yet here they stand all the same, on the side of a force that would see every world unmade.

At the halting of his steps, she looks back up to meet him in the eye. The neutrality he reflects is polished and practiced, she's done it enough herself to recognize it in someone else. This back and forth...]

What are your wishes, Howl? What do you hope to gain and what pushes you forward, for yourself?

[personal profile] expiera 2022-05-30 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
[She doesn't know what she was expecting, but it certainly wasn't anything like this, suddenly having her hand firmly clasped with a unyielding and desperate glare look in his eyes. His pull is met with no resistance, she only spares a fleeting glance downward before he successfully situates the flat of her palm against the point he wants to make.

...

Her expression doesn't change. There isn't even a muted hint of surprise. Whether she already knew or not, she is nevertheless someone already irreversibly entangled with the inhuman and supernatural long before she opened her eyes on Horos. Well aware that everyone has their unique set of personal circumstances they may or may not be keen to speak of, she wouldn't have asked anyway, even if she had taken notice. She herself was a freak, after all: what else can something that doesn't die when killed be called, other than 'monster' in every sense of the word?

But it's different, this time. Different, because Howl is explicitly showing and telling her, with his own words and actions. His chest is still, but he is standing in front of her, getting to the heart of the matter.]

It's not pointless. We are Kenoma, but we're still our own person, with our own feelings and memories. Our allegiance doesn't change who we are.

[So. That time was no fluke. He, really...]

It matters. [She reiterates, because it bears repeating. Her hand remains still at his chest, and she looks back up at him with a similar shade of defiance he showed before.] It's not over until it is, so until that time comes, it's not strange or wrong to live for yourself too. We're here now as ourselves, aren't we?

[She understands the sentiment, she does. That hopelessness is familiar, in more ways than one, and it's all the more reason she can't yield, spurred on by her own reasons for carrying on. Can he really leave it at that, insist that all he truly wants is the same sort of void where a pulse should lie...? Howl.]

[Mm. There's no way for her to know for certain, but with the clues he's left, she can more than string one and one together. He didn't smell entirely human to her from the very beginning, but judging by the heavy airs of a pompous magus he consistently put out previously, something that IS intrinsically familiar to her knowing how magi are back in her own world, she didn't think much of it. With how self-absorbed their lot are infamous for and how they tend to be willing to do virtually anything for more power, it was both plausible and none of her business that he may have undergone some ritual or contract before in order to grow his own abilities. Just an average Tuesday for any Lord of the Clock Tower, they who willingly discard their humanity for the sake of pursuing the mystics.

It took finding him at death's door to show her how wrong she's been. The Clock Tower mages may react dramatically to defeat in accordance to the depths of their selfishness ambitions, but none of those would entail death's idealization. His very existence is in jeopardy back in his world... And he does mind, in a distinctively, soul-crushingly, human way. She knows for certain, now.

The irony is too much. It'd almost be funny, if it wasn't so heartbreaking.

He agrees, he says, but she understands instinctively, immediately, that it's pure lip service. He hasn't done anything for himself. Does he even know how--or what he really wants? He's only been coasting off the motions of what he's used to to get by, nothing more and nothing less. It wouldn't get either of them anywhere to keep pushing, not with him as he is now. So instead...

(This question...)]

As I am here now, I must do what I can.

[What's asked of her. What's expected of her. What she can help with. Anything in her power. And because she's starkly aware that it's a non-answer without context, plus he did share with her something personal as is:]

If I don't, there's no meaning to this, either.

[Looking back at him straight in the eye, expression clear and firm despite the softness in her voice, she raises her own hand to rest at her sternum: where her own Shard is hidden beneath the robes, a jewel of muted dark blue that she always keep concealed. Something that should not be, yet is.

She doesn't elaborate. There is no need. Does he understand, now? All the more reason for her to get on his case too, for better or worse.]

[Everything about Horos had been absurd since their "awakening", that's objective fact no matter how any of them are adapting individually. As someone who's already had her entire world upended and replaced more than once, it's merely experience Ciel never asked for, in how to accept completely unreasonable and ridiculous situations fostered upon them by factors completely out of their control. This is just... all she can do, in line of what's asked of them. Howl is right either way, whether or not he's in full control of his thoughts.

...]

That goes for every Aion on Horos, it's not just a Kenoma or Pleroma thing. The latter have also been plucked away from their home worlds, and there's no telling if they can recover what they've left behind no matter what they do.

[They're all fighting for a chance of something, there's no guarantee offered to any of them. She could have picked something else to say too, but given the clash between his words and demeanor, perhaps he could forgive her for answering similarly.

She's lowering her arms to her side regardless, done making her point that is no less ambiguous than everything else they've exchanged between them so far. They're both just Like That, hm? Ah, well. She's certainly in no hurry to divulge her own circumstances, that fact remains true even if their motivations for doing so may be different. But since they're already "here"...]

There's too much we don't know, we're told a lot of things we have no way of proving for ourselves. That we can continue to live on as Aions here as long as the container to our soul remain intact is probably true, there's no point for them to lie to us about something like that. ["It doesn't matter if we were dead, alive, or close to dying. Here, we live."] We're also separated from what we were bound to before, the good and bad things alike. [Loved ones, cherished things, but also burdensome and unpleasant things, especially the sort imposed by someone else.] Furthermore, we're told our abilities are supposedly influenced by the concept of self-actualization, so who knows, maybe changing your mindset could change other things about you that shouldn't have been possible before. It's something within our ability to test, so maybe you can think about that the next time you find your mind wandering? ["Instead of brooding over what you've lost, think about the things you could change about yourself, now that you're in a new world not beholden to the same laws and limitations as the one you're from before?"

It's not that she can't be straightforward. Things are just... Complicated. He sorta gets it, right? It's sensible advice and a very convoluted way to further the topic in any case, it doesn't matter how hypocritical she's being with what comes out of her mouth. Easier said than done for all of that, mmhm...]

[personal profile] expiera 2022-06-09 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh? Is that so? [And just as quickly as she's been stern and unrelenting on his case, she seamlessly shifts to a pleasant and friendly smile.] I'll take it as a compliment, thank you.

[Looking probably a touch too pleased than she has any reason to be, she resumes their stroll down the hallway without missing a beat to her step. Fake it till you make it, as it goes.]

It's fine to take things at your pace, yes. Something as nebulous and intangible as purpose is naturally hard to define, people could spend their entire lives looking for it. There's no telling when something may catch your attention though, just please go at it less recklessly than before, okay? ["Less recklessly", she says, quite the understatement considering what he had been through.] Whether we like it or not, coming here did make us meet new people and offered us opportunities that would have been impossible back in our own. It wouldn't do to give up before you even start.

[They do say misery loves company, and here they are, all Kenoma. Checks out? ...In any case, if there's any particular focus in the way he looks back at her, she shows no signs of catching on. Being invested in their peers had been her own means of moving forward, for one. Getting attached is probably inevitable too, that's simply in their nature as humans are social creatures. So even if it's just this, wondering what her deal may be, it's something he can only accomplish if he keeps going on Horos. So little by little, perhaps he could find other reasons (to live) to add atop this one? Until one day...

...]
